What is Microblading: Have the Dream Eyebrows You’ve Always Wanted

When you are happy with the way you look, you are more confident and carry that confidence into every part of your life. You perform better at your job and are more involved with your family and friends. Feeling good about yourself does wonders for your emotional and mental states. Let’s not even begin to talk about convenience. Who couldn’t use a little more convenience in their lives? Microblading offers both of these and so much more! Let’s take an in-depth look at the innovative technique known as microblading, how it works, and the benefits!

What is Microblading?

Microblading is the ultimate form of eyebrow customization. The goal of microblading is to give you the eyebrows you have always wanted. Whether you are looking for a different colour, a bolder look, fuller eyebrows or anything in between, microblading is the solution.

The History of Microblading

Did you know that microblading originated in Asia? It actually goes by other names such as:

  • Microstroking
  • The Japanese Method
  • Feathering

It became popular in Asia over two decades ago and since made its way to North America. A lot of trial and error occurred during the process of perfecting this technique. This includes crossing the pigments made. However, this resulted in damage to the skin and an unnatural look. Now, microblading looks identical to your natural brows. Although microblading is relatively new it is taking the world by storm as the next big thing in permanent/semi-permanent make-up. To learn more about the history of microblading, click here.

How Does Microblading Work?

The process of microblading is very simple. The very first step is to have an initial consultation with your clinician. He or she will help you determine:

  • The best or desired brow shape for your face
  • The colour that matches your hair color
  • Your skin’s undertone

The procedure typically takes less than an hour from start to finish. Your clinician will first thoroughly clean the brow area and then numb it for your comfort. Next, a hand-held manual tool cuts tiny hair strokes in your brow skin which is then filled with pigment.

After the Procedure

Your healthcare professional will explain the aftercare protocol. This typically includes not using any make-up or wetting the brow area for 1-2 weeks. After the skin has completely healed you can go back to your normal routine. It is important to note that the use of sunscreen will extend the life of your brows by preventing fading.

Is There Anything You Need to Do Prior to the Procedure?

There are just a few things to keep in mind before the appointment. It may be recommended that you stay off of retinol products for a certain length of time prior to the procedure as well as after. The reason being is that retinol can cause your skin to become thinner. This means it would be easier to tear during the procedure. Your skin needs to be strong enough to handle the procedure

If you are on antibiotics, you may need to finish your prescription before your microblading procedure. The reason is much the same as for retinol products. Antibiotics can make your skin and blood thinner. Excess bleeding during the procedure can affect how well the pigment takes and the overall outcome of the procedure. If your own antibiotics talk with your doctor about whether or not they will affect the procedure. There are many different types of antibiotics, so it is possible that the particular one you are on will not have an effect.

It is also important to refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages and taking ibuprofen the night before. Both of these can act as blood thinners and interfere with the blood clotting process. However, Tylenol is okay to take and may actually help alleviate discomfort during the procedure when taken beforehand.

Is Microblading Painful?

The area is numbed so that the discomfort is kept to a minimal. With that being said, everyone is different. If you happen to be more sensitive you may experience a minimal amount of temporary discomfort. Others may not experience any discomfort at all.

How Long Does it Last?

Microblading is considered semi-permanent. After the initial appointment, you will return for a follow-up appointment about 4-6 weeks later. This appointment is for touch-ups and any tweaks that you would like made. After the follow-up appointment, microblading will last anywhere from one year to three years. It is advisable to go for touch-ups every year to keep you looking your best!

Benefits of Microblading

There are numerous benefits to microblading that go far beyond looking your best. These include:

  • Save Time on Your Morning Routine – A big chunk of your time is spent getting ready in the morning. This is time you would rather spend doing something else around your house or give you the extra time you need to grab a cup of coffee or breakfast. No need to spend time making sure your brows are perfect.
  • Remedy Hair Loss From Medical Conditions – Conditions such as alopecia and chemotherapy treatment can cause hair loss. Microblading is an excellent solution to give those who suffer from hair loss a natural-looking brow.
  • No Need to Worry About Smudges – Microblading doesn’t smudge or smear. Feel free to run, swim, and sweat without the need to reapply your make-up.
  • Semi-Permanent – Since microblading lasts a minimum of a year, it is extremely low maintenance. There isn’t any need for daily touchups.
  • Safe Procedure –  One of the best parts about microblading is that it is considered a very safe procedure. When done correctly by a licensed doctor, you will experience very minimal if any side-effects.

Another appealing benefit of microblading is that unlike tattoos, your eyebrows will not change color. Over time, as expected, they will lighten because of loss of saturation. However, you will not have to worry about embarrassing colour changes.
