Dermaplaning | Is It The Right Treatment For You?

If you’ve spent any amount of time on social media these days (which lets be honest, we all have) then you’ve no doubt seen a ton of posts about people receiving dermaplaning treatments. Before and after pictures are taking Instagram by storm and this treatment is catching on.

It’s not a new procedure though and has been around for quite some time, but in the last few years it has really made itself known and is becoming increasingly popular. Thank you social media!

Ageless Living Cold Lake is excited to add this treatment to our growing list of ways to help you feel great and Be Your Best Self, At Any Age.

So what exactly is dermaplaning? What does it do and why do people love it?

Dermaplaning is a super simple procedure that leaves your skin feeling better than ever with a stunning glow and is even more amazing when it’s paired with a facial or chemical peel.

What Is Dermaplaning?

Simply put, it’s like shaving your face with a small surgical blade. Sound a little scary and odd? We promise it’s not. The procedure is done in a clinic (do not attempt this at home) by a trained professional.

Using a surgical blade, the licensed aesthetician or dermatologist will pull the skin tight and use an upward motion to shave away the top layer of dead, dull skin and that peach fuzz you can’t stand (also called vellus hair). The blade will unclog your pores, exfoliate your skin and leave it glowing, hair free and feeling baby soft.

The dermaplaning treatment is also said to help the skin better absorb skin care products making them more effective, but so far this is only a theory.

This procedure resurfaces the skin for better cell turnover which helps improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is also used to help treat and reduce the appearance of acne scars.

How Long Does Dermaplaning Take And Does It Hurt?

Have you ever seen those videos with the sticky black charcoal masks? The ones where people immediately regret putting the mask on because they realize how painful it’s going to be to tear it off? The ones where people end the video with no eyebrows and tears in their eyes? Yeah, this is nothing like that.

Dermaplaning is a gentle (and rather relaxing), non-invasive procedure that has zero down time. There is no ripping of anything out of your face.

Each treatment can take anywhere from 10-30 mins depending on the patient. It’s gentle and safe enough that most people who receive treatments do so about once a month to maintain that beautiful glow and smooth (fuzz free) skin. This is not a permanent treatment and should be done routinely if you wish to maintain results.

As with any medical treatment however, each person is different so it’s important to talk with your aesthetician or dermatologist prior to your appointment. This will allow them to work with you to find the perfect plan for you and your specific skin.

Is Dermaplaning Safe For Everyone?

Because this treatment is completely non-invasive, it is safe for pretty much anyone. However, it is not recommended that you get treatments if you’re experiencing a flare up of rosacea, acne or psoriasis.

There is a chance of the treatment irritating these conditions further, so it’s important to discuss with your clinic first. They should be able to offer you other helpful treatments for your current condition or flare up. Once your other skin condition is under control, you can consider dermaplaning.

What Are The Side Effects?

The beauty of procedures that are non-invasive is that there are virtually no side effects. Following the treatment, you should be able to immediately return to your day and should experience very little discomfort.

But just like anything, everyone has different skin and some people can experience tenderness or white heads in the few days following the procedure.

In extremely rare cases, you may experience scarring or infection. While they are super rare side effects, they can happen. It’s important to contact your dermatologist if you experience these side effects after the treatment.

How Much Does The Treatment Cost?

The price for one dermaplaning session is around $150. However, the length of time, number of treatments you receive and the clinic you choose will all play a factor in your cost. Many people also opt to get a chemical peel or facial along with their dermaplaning treatment which will increase your cost as well. Talk to your dermatologist or aesthetician and they will be able to provide you an accurate cost based on your treatment plan.
