Facials with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) might sound scary (and calling it a vampire facial doesn’t help!) but the concept behind it is simple and not scary at all.

By utilizing the growth factors from your platelets and combining them with microneedling, you can help your tissue regenerate quicker. This is all a natural process and can stimulate great results for anybody looking for better skin.

If you’re interested in discovering the benefits of a vampire facial with PRP or just want to learn more about it then we’re here to help!

Here we’re going to take a deeper look into what vampire facials are, how they work, and how they can benefit your skin.

What is a vampire facial?

Simply put, a vampire facial is microneedling with the addition of PRP.

Vampire facials help tighten, repair and rehydrate the skin in a natural way. Lots of celebrities and supermodels are loving vampire facial treatments.

But what exactly is a vampire facial?

A vampire facial is a combination of microneedling and PRP.

Vampire facials are a procedure where your aesthetician uses a microneedling device to prick the skin, creating a controlled damage to the skin, which will help stimulate new collagen production.

The PRP is applied topically and helps improve healing. The PRP also decreases the redness and swelling that’s often seen after a vampire facial.

Why is it called a vampire facial?

With this treatment, we utilize your blood products, almost like a serum during the procedure to harness your body’s ability to heal and regenerate tissue.

What is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma and it’s a type of therapy where a concentration of your own platelets are injected into your skin to accelerate healing.

PRP injections use your own healing system to help improve musculoskeletal issues. It’s often used to help heal:

  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Hair restoration
  • Injured tendons
  • Damaged ligaments
  • Injured muscles
  • Joint pain

PRP injections are prepared by taking a few tubes of your blood and running them through a centrifuge. This concentrates the platelets.

These platelets are injected directly into the injured tissue to release growth factors. This increases the number of reparative cells that your body produces helping you heal faster.

What are the benefits of a vampire facial?

Microneedling with PRP (vampire facials) has been known to help improve signs of aging, acne scarring, wrinkles, and age spots. The use of PRP in vampire facials helps achieve the patients’ desired look faster.

Microneedling can also be used to treat scars on other areas of the body. Most research confirming its effectiveness is focused on facial treatments.

Anybody who considers having a vampire facial is usually looking to treat certain marks or blemishes on their face.

What can a vampire facial treat?

  • Acne scars
  • Surgical scars
  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Large pores
  • Uneven skin texture

Patients usually receive better results with the addition of PRP than with microneedling alone.

How do you prepare for a vampire facial?

The best way to prepare for your appointment is to:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure or tanning several weeks before your appointment
  • Wear SPF-30 sunscreen or more daily for at least two weeks before and after your appointment
  • Drink lots of water in the week coming up to your appointment
  • Arrive with a bare face (no make-up)

What happens during a vampire facial appointment?

Before the appointment

You should arrive at your appointment with at least 15 minutes to spare. This will give you enough time to fill out any last-minute paperwork.

As soon as you’re ready, they’ll cleanse your skin and apply a topical anaesthetic.

This will have to sit on your skin for about 30 minutes before the aesthetician can begin the facial.

During the appointment

There are two steps to a vampire facial:

  1. The microneedling

This lasts about 30 minutes depending on what area is being treated.

The doctor will roll a professional-grade derma roller on the desired areas of your face.

  1. PRP

A syringe of blood will be taken from you while your face is numbing. This will then be put into a centrifuge which separates out the components of your blood.

Then, after the microneedling, the PRP solution is massaged into the treatment area. The microneedling creates small micro punctures in your skin which allows for the addition of PRP.
